Brookhaven Institute for Psychoanalysis and Christian Thought (BIPACT) is dedicated to training clinicians in an integrated psychoanalytic approach that is consistent with historical Christianity and psychoanalysis. BIPACT will not discriminate with regard to sex, age, race, national origin, religious or sexual orientation, or physical disability.
We are currently forming a new class that will begin Fall 2021. Applications will be due May 15, 2021.

BIPACT is unique among psychoanalytic institutes because of its intentional respect for both the tripartite psychoanalytic educational process of instruction, supervision, and psychoanalysis, and its acknowledgement of the value of theological/spiritual integration. All courses are taught through use of the most applicable psychoanalytic literature, by senior analysts who have expertise in that area. In addition, BIPACT faculty with expertise in these same areas, extend the learning through additional psychoanalytic reading, and through providing consilient perspectives from Christian thought.
Beginning with the first intensive, BIPACT seeks to foster a sense of Christian community by convening at a retreat type setting. In subsequent in-residence weekends, daily contemplative groups and communal meals enhance the learning process. Free time for informal personal relating is provided.
Care has been taken to fashion this program in a way that will not overburden students with expense. Therefore, the model provides psychoanalytic instruction in only four years. This is accomplished through the intensive face-to-face learning as well as cyber instruction via interactive video software. Our goal of care for the candidate motivates us to provide training that is both affordable and has a relational sensibility.
Mindfulness is a broad term appearing currently in many psychoanalytic seminars, and is a form of meditation that has gained great appeal. At BIPACT, we acknowledge the powerful impact of meditation through our return to Christian contemplative practices. The program's spiritual director will work with the program developers to include times of spiritual reflection on the material studied, enabling candidates to experience the import of didactic offerings at the affective level.
In keeping with guidelines set forth by several accrediting bodies, training is comprised of classes, personal analysis, and supervised clinical work.
Curriculum: In-residence classes meet each year during the late summer intensive, which concludes with the first module, and then three additional modules in fall, winter, and spring (at the CAPS convention, usually in late March to early April). There are continuous reading groups and case consultations between in-person classes in order to expand and enhance the modules' content. Reading groups and modules will be co-taught by visiting senior analysts and BIPACT faculty/instructors to ensure both excellence in psychoanalysis and theological integration. Virtual meetings will meet on Thursday evenings (time to be determined).
Personal Psychoanalysis: Your personal analysis should be initiated prior to the beginning of supervised clinical work. All candidates are encouraged to complete a 3-5 times per week analysis. Because BIPACT does not subscribe to a training analyst system (meaning pre-selected analysts), you are free to work with an analyst of your own choosing with BIPACT approval. Outside of the approval process, your personal analysis is a completely personal and private experience and will not be shared with any BIPACT faculty or staff.
Clinical Consultation: All candidates will work with consultants on a minimum of two cases (one male, one female) seen in a psychoanalysis of at least 3-5 times per week.
The program is designed to be finished during the 4-year period, but each candidate is encouraged to complete the program at his or her own pace as the emphasis is on developing each candidate's unique analytic identity.
*Specific parameters for each of the above can be found in the handbook provided to those interested in training.
Prospective candidates with an MA or MS in psychology/counseling, an MSW, a PhD or PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology, and psychiatrists with an MD or DO are eligible to apply for training. In order to begin the clinical consultation phase of the training, candidates must be independently licensed as mental health practitioners in their respective disciplines. While individuals can begin consultation prior to their being licensed, consultation hours will not apply to the required hours for the program until they are fully licensed in their respective state.
Prospective candidates with graduate degrees from other disciplines including theology/pastoral ministry and philosophy are encouraged to apply as academic/scholar candidates. BIPACT is committed to providing psychoanalytic education for all interested individuals who have completed a graduate education.
Tuition is set at $6,500 per year for the program beginning in 2020. Payment in full is due by July 1. Tuition includes reimbursement of required memberships in the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS and Division 39 of the American Psychological Association, as well as subscription to the Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEP) web-database. While each candidate will pay for each of these on their own (to keep these memberships in the candidate's control), reimbursement will be paid once receipts of these payments are provided to BIPACT administration. A split payment is available at the yearly rate of $6,800, with 50% payable by July 1 ($3,400) and the balance paid by December 1 ($3,400).
A candidate must register with the Institute once a year, on or before July 1. All candidates, those taking classes, those who have completed the required classes but have not met all the requirements for graduation, and those on leave, need to register. The registration fee is $100. A late registration fee of $125 will be charged for registrations filed after the deadline. Candidates are to arrange a split payment with the BIPACT administration no later than June 20.
All lodging and meals are included in the tuition costs. The only exception is the CAPS weekend which must be paid for separately by the candidate. All travel costs are the responsibility of the candidates, including transportation to and from the airport to the lecture location.
